5 Card Stud is the poker game where it is easiest to figure out what your opponent has, since four out of five cards are open. On the other hand, this fact makes bluffing very powerful, since a significant bet with i.e. four spades in the open very well could be a flush. Like other stud games, it is usually played as fixed limit.

The Game

  1. Like in all stud games, players put out an ‘ante’ before every game.
  2. Every player gets one closed card and one open. The player with the lowest card puts out a half, or a full bet after own choice. The others then choose if they want to fold, call or raise. There can only be raised three times in each betting round.
  3. After the first round, the remaining players are dealt another open card, and the 2nd betting round is now initiated by the player with the highest visible card.
  4. After the 3rd open card has been dealt, bets double up(in fixed limit), and once again the player with the highest visible card initiates the betting round.
  5. The 4th and last open card is dealt, and all players now have five cards. The last betting round is initiated by the player with highest card, followed by a showdown where the best hand wins the pot.
